What to do

Surrounded by serene countryside, diamond-shaped islands scattered in the Atlantic Ocean, bewitched castles, exclusive golf clubs and fish-villages perched on cobbled streets, Edinburgh has truly been designed to impress. Thanks to the gothic atmosphere of its medieval urban structure and grand Georgian architecture, the entire Edinburgh’s city centre has been listed by UNESCO among the World’s Heritage Sites, while the liveliness of its creative scene has carved a reputation for the city as one of the biggest North Europe’s cultural hubs. Designer studios, indie bookshops, whiskey bars and scandi-vibe restaurants pop up at every corner, making it the perfect destination for a glamorous getaway.

Best time to visit? Planning for the ideal weather isn’t really a thing here, as Edinburgh (and the whole of Scotland) is famous for showcasing four seasons in a single day. The prominent Fringe, the world's largest arts festival, takes place every August, but the Scottish capital offers breathtaking scenery and an exciting programme of events all year around.

You could start the day by reaching the top of Arthur’s Seat, in Holyrood Park. The highest point of the city is what remains of an extinct volcano and offers striking views of Scotland’s capital and the Lothian area. However, the best way to discover Edinburgh is by wandering the intricate medieval system of narrow streets and secret passageways (closes) of the Old Town, before heading to one of the buzziest neighbourhoods for a yummy brunch and a gratifying shopping session.

Follow in the footsteps of J.K. Rowling, enjoy a stroll along the colourful shop fronts of Victoria Street and Grassmarket for a tasty bite, then leave behind the Princess Street Gardens (the perfect spot for a nap on the freshly cut grass during summer) and head to the vibrant area of Stockbridge, a gathering spot for local creatives, renowned for its Bohemian ateliers, antiques stores, hipster bakeries and independent bookshops. A few spots not to miss nearby: the red sandstone buildings of the former industrial district of Dean Village, along the water of Leith river; and the all-year-round gem of the Royal Botanic Garden, with its 70 acres of impressive landscape dating back to the 17th century.

Whether you are visiting in winter or in summer, do not miss the sunset at Calton Hill. An easy uphill path, just a few steps away from the main shopping street, will lead you to the top of one of the 7 hills that dominate Edinburgh, where to wait for the most striking sunset over the city. In addition to the endless view that sweeps from Arthur's Seat to Firth of Forth, here you can also find a National Monument inspired by Athens’ Parthenon and the small Greek temple, once home to the old observatory, which houses a new contemporary art museum.
